What's the difference between counselling and psychotherapy?
Counselling and psychotherapy are umbrella terms that cover a range of talking therapies and the differences can be very subtle.
Usually counselling is shorter term therapy design to tackle specific symptoms and are more focused upon behaviour.
Psychotherapy focuses on the client's processes and way of being in the world, like pattern repetition, inhibitions etc...
How long are the sessions?
Each session is 50 minutes for individual therapy and 110 minutes for couples.
How often will I need to go?
Usually once a week, in some instances, if the client or therapist considers they could be more often, it would be discussed.
What are the costs for individual counselling/therapy?
My fee for individual therapy is £50.00.
How many sessions will I need?
Duration varies form individual to individual. For short term therapy to deal with a very specific problem a minimum 12 session are required to experience significant changes. Other times an open ended therapy can provide the best ground for change.
What's the goal of individual therapy?
The goal is to explore any situation that might be bothering the client and gain insight improving the relationship with the self and the world around us, as well as regaining clarity of mind and freedom from unhelpful beliefs.
What's the goal of Couples therapy?
The goal is to create a safe space for both individuals to communicate and resolve, whether it is to overcome a difficult situation and resolve what is damaging the relationship.
What can I expect in a session?
Each session is unique but it will involve talking about what's worrying you and together we might find ways to gain insight into what you are experiencing. I might ask you few questions, other times I might just listen, sometimes offer you some insight that might be useful for you. There's a common and fundamental fact in all sessions however, that the space provided will be safe, without judgement and with clear ethical boundaries.
Are you supervised?
Yes, it is a requirement for all therapists in order to assist and help clients better.
Is it totally confidential?
Yes, anonymity and confidentiality is assured at all times. In order to gain insight and help clients better, therapists are required to attend regular supervision, but any details that could reveal the client's identity are not discussed and your anonymity protected at all times.
What's intergrative therapy?
Integrative psychotherapy and counselling involves using different techniques, styles and psychotherapy models to suit the clients needs and therefore enrich the process with all the tools available to reach the client's goal. The way I work draws from different theories ranging from CBT, Art, Gestalt, Psychoanalysis, Transpersonal, Sand Tray, Dream Work, amongst others.
How will I feel during the sessions?
Talking about life and feelings can bring many different emotions, sometimes you might feel uncomfortable, other times not, that's very normal. Part of our job together will be to have a space to feel those emotions, to learn from them and regain the freedom to feel them outside the therapy room in a sustainable and responsible way. An important part of my job is to make sure that when you leave the sessions you are safe to be in the world.
